Made-to-measure or bespoke — and which you need

The two words get used interchangeably across Bangkok, so here is the honest distinction. Made-to-measure starts from an existing block pattern and adjusts it to your measurements. Bespoke drafts a pattern from scratch for your body and refines it on you across fittings.

Bespoke costs more in time and skill, and it is the only route to a genuinely correct fit if your shoulders slope, your posture leans forward, or one arm sits differently from the other — which describes most people. For a straightforward build with no strong asymmetries, made-to-measure gets you most of the way at a lower price.

We will tell you which one your situation needs rather than selling you up. A shop that only ever recommends its most expensive option is telling you something. How a suit is built here, step by step

The conversation

Before a tape measure appears we ask how you will wear it — daily office, one wedding, evenings out, a boardroom back home. Those are different garments, and the answer sets cloth weight and construction. If you fly out on a date, that date gets fixed now.

Measuring

Around twenty measurements plus posture and stance notes that never appear on a size label: shoulder slope, blade prominence, whether you stand upright or slightly forward. This is why two men with the same chest measurement need different jackets.

Pattern

Your measurements become a paper pattern, kept on file — which is what makes a remote re-order possible years later.

Cutting

Cloth laid so the grain runs true, with seam allowance left in. That allowance is what lets the suit be altered in five years, and it is the first thing a rushed job removes.

Fittings

Two to three. We check the collar sitting flat against the neck, the shoulder seam ending where your shoulder ends, the sleeve pitch matching how your arms hang, and the balance front to back.

Finishing

Buttonholes, lining, pressing, and the hand-work at the collar and lapel roll that stops a jacket looking machine-made.

Canvas: the part you cannot see, and cannot fix later

Between the cloth and the lining sits the layer that gives a jacket its chest. It is the single biggest quality variable and it is invisible from the outside.

Fully canvassed means a floating horsehair canvas, stitched rather than glued — it breathes, moves with you, and moulds to your chest over a few months. Half-canvassed runs canvas through the chest and lapel with fusing below: a sensible middle ground and the practical minimum in this climate. Fused means interfacing glued to the cloth throughout — cheaper, quicker, stiffer, warmer, and in Bangkok humidity the adhesive eventually fails and the lapel bubbles.

Glue does not breathe. When you compare two quotes in this city, this is usually where the difference sits. Ask which one you are being offered.

2-piece, 3-piece, and the rest

A 2-piece is the everyday workhorse. A 3-piece adds a waistcoat for weddings, presentations and heavily air-conditioned rooms, and photographs well — which is why grooms ask for it. In this heat, have the waistcoat cut in the same tropical cloth and consider a lighter back panel so the jacket can come off at the reception.

We also cut blazers and odd jackets worn with separate trousers, which is the most-used garment in most Bangkok wardrobes; trousers on their own; and overcoats — nobody needs one here, but a good number of our clients live somewhere that does, and a coat is one of the few garments where a tailor beats the high street visibly.

Cloth for 35°C and 70% humidity

Ask for the weight in grams before you look at the colour. 210–250g is the tropical range: enough body to hang properly, light enough to wear at midday. The 260–300g four-season cloth sold across Europe is comfortable in air conditioning and punishing outside it.

Weave matters as much as weight. A high-twist worsted has the yarn twisted hard before weaving, leaving gaps you can genuinely feel breathe, and it resists creasing stubbornly. Ask for the body half-lined or unlined — the cheapest comfort upgrade available. Full detail in our cloth range.

One caution worth stating plainly: cashmere is an insulating fibre. It feels wonderful and it exists to trap warm air. Keep it to a small percentage in a light blend, or save it for a colder country.

Pricing and turnaround, in the open

Most suits are ready in 3–5 days. That is a real figure rather than a headline, but it assumes you come in early enough for a proper fitting to happen inside it. If your schedule genuinely does not allow one, we will say so and suggest shirts now with a suit on your next visit, rather than hand you something that disappoints you at home.

Your pattern stays on file either way, so a second suit can be ordered from abroad and shipped.

The order a commission runs in, from the first visit to collection.

1. Choose your cloth. Handle the fabric in daylight and decide on weight before mill or colour. Weight is what determines whether the suit is wearable in Bangkok.
2. Get measured. Around twenty measurements are taken, along with notes on posture, shoulder slope and stance. Bring the shoes you intend to wear.
3. Confirm the details. Lapel, buttons, vents, pockets, lining and canvas are agreed and written down before anything is cut.
4. Attend the first fitting. The basted garment goes on your body and the shoulder, chest and waist are corrected with chalk and pins.
5. Attend the second fitting. The refined garment is checked again, with sleeve and trouser length set against your shoes.
6. Collect the finished suit. Final pressing and a last check in the shop. Measurements and pattern stay on file for repeat orders.
