Start from the venue, not the suit

Where and when you marry decides almost everything else, and a Thai wedding offers three quite different settings.

Air-conditioned ballroom. The one setting where a proper dinner suit earns its place. Midnight blue reads blacker than black under artificial light and photographs with more depth.

Garden, temple or riverside. Tropical-weight wool or wool-linen in mid-blue, olive or warm grey. A three-piece works here because the evening cools.

Beach, if you are heading south. Linen or wool-linen in stone, sand or pale blue. Skip the waistcoat unless the photographs matter more to you than the afternoon does.

Dressing the whole party

Order from the same bolt. Two navy jackets cut from different batches can read visibly different in the same photograph. It is the most common complaint people have about their own wedding photos, and ordering the party together removes it entirely.

Match, do not clone. The parties that photograph best put the groom in something subtly distinct — a different lapel, a waistcoat when the others have none, a half-shade lighter in the same family. Six identical suits on six different builds flatten the photographs and flatter almost nobody.

Fit each person individually. Coordinated colour, individual cut. A groomsman in a badly fitting suit is far more visible in the photographs than a marginally different shade would be.

One point of contact. Usually the best man rather than the groom, who has enough to think about. We will work to whoever holds the schedule.

A timeline that works backwards from the date

Before you arrive: message us the date, venue, party size and any colour scheme, so cloth is pulled in advance.

First appointment: everyone measured. This one cannot slip — the whole schedule is built on it.

Mid-way: individual fittings.

At least 48 hours before the ceremony: final collection. We build that margin in deliberately so a last correction never happens on the morning.

Guests arriving on different days is normal and easily scheduled around. Someone landing the night before is not — tell us early and we will say honestly what is achievable.

Black tie, done properly

If it is black tie the rules are worth knowing: satin or grosgrain facings on the lapel — this, more than anything, is what makes a dinner jacket rather than a dark suit — peak or shawl rather than notch, one button, no belt loops (side adjusters or braces, with a single braid down the trouser seam), a cummerbund or low waistcoat so no shirt shows when the jacket is open, and a hand-tied bow tie in the same material as the facings.

For a tropical evening a wool-mohair blend around 220–250g is the right cloth: crisp, cool, with a dry lustre that catches light beautifully indoors. Break any of these rules deliberately if you want — just know which one you are breaking.

Details grooms forget

A working lapel buttonhole with a stem loop behind it if there are boutonnières — five minutes at the time, impossible afterwards. Half-lined or unlined jackets for anything outdoors. Shirt collars with enough structure to stand open if nobody is wearing a tie, because a collapsing collar ruins otherwise good photographs.

A slightly shorter trouser break than you would wear at the office. And decide shoes and socks early — they appear in more photographs than anyone expects.

Everyone's pattern stays on file. Groomsmen routinely order a second suit in a different cloth once they are home, and we ship it. A wedding suit cut properly is a suit you will wear again — which is the main argument for having one made rather than hired.

How to plan a wedding suit from Bangkok

Work backwards from the ceremony date — this is the order that leaves room for correction.

1. Start from the venue. Decide the cloth against the location, the hour and the temperature, not from a photograph. An outdoor midday ceremony rules out a heavy dinner suit.
2. Set the date and count backwards. Allow six to eight weeks where possible, and more if the whole party is being dressed.
3. Book the first appointment. Measure, choose cloth, and agree the details for the groom before the party is ordered.
4. Order the party together. Groomsmen and fathers are cut from the same bolt so the colour matches. Dye lots differ between batches.
5. Attend the fittings. Two to three fittings, with the last scheduled close to the wedding rather than weeks before it.
6. Collect and press before the day. Take delivery with time to spare, and hang the garment properly rather than leaving it in a bag.
