Bespoke vs off-the-rack: what's the difference?
Made-to-measure or off-the-peg? What changes in fit, cost and how long a suit lasts - plus the cases where off-the-rack is genuinely the right call.
What each one means
Off-the-rack is made to a standard size and sold as-is; you take the closest fit and usually alter it. Bespoke is cut from scratch to your exact measurements, in cloth you choose, shaped over multiple fittings. One is built for an average body; the other for yours.
The difference you can see: fit
A rack suit fits the sizes it was cut for, not you — hence the pulling at the shoulder, the gaping collar, the sleeves that never sit right. Bespoke corrects for your posture and proportions, so the jacket sits clean and moves with you.
The cost reality
Off-the-rack looks cheaper until you add alterations — which can approach the price of the garment for a fit that's still only okay. In Pratunam, a genuine made-to-measure suit starts from ฿7,500, which is why the value math often favours bespoke here.
When off-the-rack is fine
For a one-off, last-minute need on a standard build, a good off-the-rack suit with light alterations can do the job. For a wardrobe you'll wear for years — or anything that has to look right in photographs — bespoke wins. If you are still weighing it up for your own case, we set out whether a bespoke suit is worth it, including when it is not.

✂ Book a fittingIs bespoke always more expensive than off-the-rack?
No — bespoke is not more expensive once alterations are added to the off-the-rack suit. Bespoke from ฿7,500 in Bangkok is competitive with a good department-store suit plus the tailoring it will need to fit, and the result is cut for your body rather than adjusted towards it. Where bespoke genuinely costs more is time — 3–5 days and two to three fittings — which is the real trade rather than the money.
How long does a bespoke suit last?
With good cloth and reasonable care, a canvassed bespoke suit lasts years rather than seasons, and because we keep your pattern on file a reorder matches the first. The limiting factor in Bangkok is usually humidity rather than wear: a fused jacket eventually bubbles where the adhesive fails, which is why the canvas question matters more here than in a temperate climate. Rotation extends the life of any suit considerably.
What is the difference in fit?
Off-the-rack is sized to an average and adjusted towards you; bespoke drafts a pattern from your body. The difference shows up in asymmetry — a lower shoulder, forward posture, or arms that hang differently, which describes most people. A block pattern fights those and bespoke does not. For a symmetrical build with no strong quirks, a well-altered off-the-rack suit gets closer than people expect, and G.Armani Suit in Pratunam, Bangkok will tell you which case you are before taking the order.
