Where a shirt goes wrong off the peg
Ready-made shirts are built around two measurements — collar and sleeve — and everything else is an average. That is why the collar fits but the body billows, or the body fits and you cannot fasten the neck.
The four places a shirt is judged are the collar, the shoulder seam, the cuff and the body taper. Off the peg you get at most two of them right.
The shoulder is the one nobody thinks about and the only one that cannot be corrected later. If the seam sits inboard of your shoulder point the sleeve drags every time you reach; if it hangs past it, the whole shirt looks borrowed.
Cloth for heat and air conditioning
Poplin is smooth, fine and slightly crisp — the dress-shirt standard, takes a press beautifully, shows creases readily. Oxford is a heavier basket weave, softer and more forgiving, excellent for daytime. Twill has a diagonal weave with a subtle sheen and creases less than poplin. Voile and fine batiste are light and semi-sheer — cool at midday, but wear a vest underneath.
For Bangkok, weave matters more than thread count. An open Oxford at a modest count breathes better than a dense high-count poplin that looks more impressive on paper.
Linen and linen-cotton are the coolest options. Linen creases, and on a shirt that reads as relaxed rather than scruffy. Linen-cotton gives most of the coolness with noticeably less creasing — the sensible choice for a shirt worn to dinner.
Avoid non-iron finishes and polyester blends. Both work by coating or replacing the fibre, and both trap heat.
Collars, cuffs and the details you choose
Collars. The collar frames your face and is the most visible decision you will make. A spread collar suits a slimmer face and works with a tie knot; a point collar elongates; a button-down is the most casual and most forgiving worn open. If you will mostly wear the shirt without a tie — which in this climate is most of the time — ask for a slightly taller collar band with enough structure to stand up on its own.
Cuffs. Single (barrel) for everyday, double (French) for formal evenings. The cuff should let the shirt sit at the base of your thumb without sliding over your hand. If you wear a watch, say so — the watch-side cuff can be cut fractionally wider.
The rest. Placket or concealed front, chest pocket or none, pleats or a clean back, split yoke, mother-of-pearl buttons, an optional monogram. None of these change the fit; all of them change whether the shirt feels like yours.
Ordering a set
Most clients who order one shirt come back for four. If you already know that, order two first, wear them for a day, then confirm the rest. A small tweak to the body taper or cuff after real wear is worth more than any amount of standing still in a fitting room — and it is the difference between four good shirts and four identical mistakes.
Many clients order shirts alongside a bespoke suit so the collar height and cuff work properly with the jacket. A shirt collar that disappears under a jacket collar is the most common mismatch we correct.

Care in this climate
Wash cool, skip the tumble dryer, and hang shirts damp on a shaped hanger — most of the ironing does itself. Store them hanging with air around the collar rather than compressed in a stack, and never in a sealed plastic cover.
Take metal collar stays out before washing. Leaving them in is how collars end up with permanent creases and rust marks.

How much does a tailored shirt cost?

Why do off-the-peg shirts fit badly?
Off-the-peg shirts are sized on collar and sleeve alone, which leaves the body of the shirt to a single average that fits almost nobody. Which shirt fabric works in Bangkok's heat and air conditioning?
Lightweight cotton poplin and fine oxford handle Bangkok best — breathable outdoors, opaque enough under office lighting, and quick to dry. The genuine difficulty here is not the heat alone but the swing between 35°C outside and aggressive air conditioning inside. A slightly heavier weave copes with that transition better than the thinnest cloth on the shelf, which will cling the moment you step outside. Avoid heavy twills unless the shirt is for evening, and avoid high synthetic content entirely — it traps heat and holds odour in this climate.
What collar and cuff options can I choose?
You choose collar shape, collar height, cuff style, placket, pocket and buttons on every shirt we make. Yes — we can copy a shirt you already own, so bring it in. Copying a shirt that already fits you is often faster and more accurate than describing what you want, and it removes the guesswork from collar and cuff preferences entirely. We will still measure you, because a favourite shirt is usually a compromise you have stopped noticing. Where the old shirt is wrong we will point it out and let you decide whether to keep the quirk or correct it. Bring it clean and unpressed if you can, since a heavily pressed shirt hides how it sits.
